Storyline — High-wear Homestead puts on great racing: Homestead-Miami Speedway is one of the more high tire wear tracks we have on the NASCAR circuit. High wear generally leads to great racing for the fans for several reasons. First, when tires wear out over the course of a run, drivers are able to manage their tires. Those that charge out of the gate are fast early but fall-off more; while those that are easier on their tires early in a run will be faster at the end. That always results in more passing on the track. Second, when tires wear quickly, teams decide to change all four at every reasonable opportunity. That results in more pits stops, which gets the crews involved, this highlighting the team aspect of the sport. It also creates passing opportunities on pit road, with the fastest crews gaining spots for their teams.
“Homestead has produced some of the best racing we have seen in NASCAR over the past several years,” said Greg Stucker, Goodyear‘s director of racing. “As we have all seen, tires wear significantly at Homestead. That leads to some cars being fast at the beginning of the run, while others are faster at the end of the run. That‘s all based on a driver‘s ability to manage his tires — some guys are just better at that than others. With Homestead‘s multiple lanes and progressive banking, we see a lot of long runs, leading to a lot of passing throughout a run.”
Notes — Cup, Xfinity return to Homestead on familiar tire set-up: NASCAR Cup and Xfinity Series will run the same tire set-up at Homestead this weekend . . . this is the same combination of left- and right-side tires that these teams have run at Homestead since 2019 . . . these teams also ran this tire set-up at Darlington in 2020 . . . as on all NASCAR ovals greater than one mile in length, teams are required to run inner liners in all four tire positions at Homestead . . . air pressure in those inner liners should be 12-25 psi greater than that of the outer tire.
