Storyline — Cup returns to Road America for first time in 65 years: While the NASCAR Xfinity Series has made an annual trip to Road America since 2010, the NASCAR Cup Series has not made an appearance at the Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin-based course since 1956, with that race won by NASCAR Hall of Famer Tim Flock.  This is the second “new” road course that has been added to the Cup schedule for the 2021 season — the other being Circuit of The Americas.  Both of those are similar in that they are relatively long courses, have a lot of elevation changes and feature more right-hand turns than left-handers.  Therefore, Goodyear will bring the same tire code (on all four corners of the car) to Road America that it brought to COTA in May.  This tire is new in 2021, but has the same tread compound as the one that Xfinity teams ran at this course last season.

“Road America is one of several road courses at which we will run the same tire code this season,” said Greg Stucker, Goodyear‘s director of racing.  “All three national series ran this tire at COTA in May and the Xfinity cars ran it again at Mid-Ohio in June, with it coming back again at Indianapolis in August.  It helps teams to have a common tire at different tracks because they can start to build a notebook on that tire and remove that variable from how they approach tracks that are of different lengths, number of turns and balance between straightaways and corners.  For the Cup guys, being on this tire at COTA will give them a bit of head start as they learn Road America.”

Notes — Cup, Xfinity cars on COTA/Mid-Ohio tire at Road America: NASCAR Cup and Xfinity Series teams will run the same tire code on all four corners of the car at Road America . . . this is a different tire than Xfinity ran at this track last season (construction update) . . . these teams did run this tire at COTA in May, and the Xfinity cars ran it again at Mid-Ohio in June . . . teams in both of these series will also run this tire on the Indianapolis road course later this season . . . as on all NASCAR road courses, teams will not run inner liners in their tires at Road America.

Wet Weather Tires — White-lettered tires on hand: Goodyear will bring its wet weather radials for use by teams in all NASCAR series at Road America, should NASCAR decide that conditions warrant . . . Cup teams will have up to 3 sets of wets for practice/qualifying and up to 5 sets for the race . . . Xfinity will have 5 sets of wets available for their event, with a maximum of 4 sets for the race . . . this tire was last run in NASCAR competition by teams in all three of NASCAR‘s national series at COTA in May . . . the last time wet weather tires were run at Road America was by Xfinity teams last August . . . in addition to the obvious difference of a tread pattern versus Goodyear‘s dry weather “slick” tires, the “Goodyear” and “Eagle” lettering on the sidewalls of the wet weather tires is white, not the standard yellow.
