Storyline — High-speed Watkins Glen requires unique road course tire: Watkins Glen International is a faster and less technical road course than others on the NASCAR Cup circuit, and thus requires a tire that reflects that. Because of all the sustained speed on the course, Watkins Glen requires a tire that utilizes a more heat resistant tread compound than the other courses. And while that is the goal of this tread compound, it is still in the top one-third most tractive in the Goodyear tire lineup.
“Because of its configuration, cars carry a lot of sustained speed at Watkins Glen,” said Greg Stucker, Goodyear‘s director of racing. “That, combined with the fact that it was repaved as recently as 2016, leads to those high speeds. In racing, speed means that there is a lot of heat generated in the tire, and that is the chief concern at The Glen. For that reason, we bring a different tread compound than we have at other road courses, and one that is more heat resistant.“
Notes —Cup, Xfinity return to Watkins Glen on 2019 tire code; Trucks to run the same: Teams all three NASCAR national series will run the same Goodyear tire code on all four tire positions at Watkins Glen . . . this is the same tire that Cup and Xfinity teams ran at The Glen in their last race at the course in 2019 . . . this is the only track at which NASCAR teams run this particular tire code . . . as on all NASCAR road courses, teams will not run inner liners in their tires at Watkins Glen.
Wet Weather Tires — White-lettered tires on hand: Goodyear will bring its wet weather radials for use by teams in all NASCAR series at Road America, should NASCAR decide that conditions warrant . . . set limits are 5 sets for Cup, 4 sets for Xfinity and 3 sets for Truck . . . this tire was last run in NASCAR competition by teams in all three of NASCAR‘s national series at COTA in May . . . in addition to the obvious difference of a tread pattern versus Goodyear‘s dry weather “slick” tires, the “Goodyear” and “Eagle” lettering on the sidewalls of the wet weather tires is white, not the standard yellow.
