Storyline — Cup joins Xfinity on Indy road course: Goodyear had a head start on this weekend‘s NASCAR Cup debut on the road course at Indianapolis Motor Speedway with a NASCAR test in January 2020 and an Xfinity Series race last July.  The tire code teams will be running this weekend is different from what Xfinity ran their last season, although the tread compound is the same.  Teams in these two NASCAR series have the advantage of having run this tire code at Circuit of the Americas, Road America and Mid-Ohio (Xfinity only) earlier this season.

“We were very happy with the tire performance in the Xfinity Series race on the Indy road course last season,” said Greg Stucker, Goodyear‘s director of racing.  “This year‘s tire uses the same tread compound on our updated road course construction, and teams have been on this tire several times at other road course already this season.  Having practice will allow teams to get up to speed, and we certainly look forward to a great Cup race as we add yet another new track to the 2021 schedule.”

Notes — NASCAR teams to run COTA/Road America tire set-up on Indy road course: Teams in both the NASCAR Cup and Xfinity Series will run the same tire code on the road course at Indianapolis Motor Speedway this weekend . . . as on all NASCAR road courses, they will run the same code on all four corners of the car . . . this is a different tire code than what Xfinity teams ran on this course last season, with this tire featuring just a construction update . . . this tire has been run by NASCAR teams at COTA in May (both series), Mid-Ohio in June (Xfinity only) and Road America in July (both series) . . . as on all NASCAR road courses, teams will not run inner liners in their tires at Indianapolis.

Wet Weather Tires — White-lettered tires on hand: Goodyear will bring its wet weather radials for use by teams in all NASCAR series at Road America, should NASCAR decide that conditions warrant . . . Cup teams will have up to 3 sets of wets for practice/qualifying and up to 5 sets for the race . . . Xfinity will have 5 sets of wets available for their event, with a maximum of 4 sets for the race . . . this tire was last run in NASCAR competition by teams in all three of NASCAR‘s national series at COTA in May . . . in addition to the obvious difference of a tread pattern versus Goodyear‘s dry weather “slick” tires, the “Goodyear” and “Eagle” lettering on the sidewalls of the wet weather tires is white, not the standard yellow.
