Storyline — Cup teams try to “get a grip” on final playoff spots: As the NASCAR Cup Series returns to Daytona International Speedway for the 26th and final race of the regular season, teams will be trying to lock down the final playoff spots while looking to gain grip and stability on the track.  At Daytona, where cars race within inches of each other, stability in the draft is important.  Through the choice of its tread compounds, Goodyear aids in that quest, building mechanical grip into the tire set-up.  This is the Cup Series‘ fifth consecutive race on the Daytona oval on these two tire codes, so teams have a well-established notebook on what to expect.

“Gaining mechanical grip through the tire set-up is an important factor for teams at Daytona,” said Greg Stucker, Goodyear‘s director of racing.  “With the style of racing we see on this superspeedway, with cars side-by-side and nose-to-tail throughout the pack, stability is of the utmost importance.  We design our tires for Daytona with tread compounds that give the cars the grip they need and the stability to race in such tight quarters.”

Notes — Cup, Xfinity return to Daytona on well-established tire set-up: Teams in the NASCAR Cup and Xfinity Series will run the same tire set-up at Daytona this week . . . this is the same combination of left- and right-side tires that Cup teams have run on the Daytona oval since July 2019, with Xfinity moving to this tire set-up in February 2020 . . . as on all NASCAR ovals greater than one mile in length, teams are required to run inner liners in all four tire positions at Daytona . . . air pressure in those inner liners should be 12-25 psi greater than that of the outer tire.
