Rep. Jeffrey Elmore of North Wilkesboro and Sen. Eddie Settle of the Pleasant Hill community on Friday jointly announced about $42 million in appropriations for various purposes in Wilkes County in the new two-year state budget.

Elmore and Settle said the new budget … has:

• $4 million for Speedway Motorsports Inc., an incentive state officials earlier agreed to give the company for having the NASCAR All-Star race at the North Wilkesboro Speedway this past May. Elmore said SMI also committed to having two NASCAR events the following season. One is the Brushy Mountain Powersports 150, part of the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour, on Sept. 30. There is speculation about the track hosting the All-Star race again; [Emphasis added]

• $3 million for a pedestrian bridge over U.S. 421 for events at North Wilkesboro Speedway. Elmore said efforts were made for a cloverleaf interchange for U.S. 421 and Fishing Creek Road, but this was deferred to the transportation improvement planning process
