More about Bowman Gray Stadium
Bowman Gray Stadium, located in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, is one of the most iconic short tracks in NASCAR history. Opened in 1937, the stadium originally served as a multi-purpose venue, primarily for football, and was later adapted for auto racing in 1949 when NASCAR held its first sanctioned race there. Often referred to as "The Madhouse" for its intense, action-packed racing, the quarter-mile asphalt oval is tightly nestled within the stadium’s football field, creating a unique and intimate setting for fans. Its tight turns and close confines have fostered fierce rivalries and dramatic finishes, making it a beloved track in NASCAR's grassroots circuit.
The stadium has a rich legacy as one of NASCAR's oldest venues and remains a centerpiece for regional racing. Bowman Gray hosted its last NASCAR Cup Series race in 1971 before transitioning to focus on weekly modified series and local racing events. Today, it is a prominent part of the NASCAR Advance Auto Parts Weekly Series, where aspiring drivers and seasoned veterans compete in front of passionate fans. Over the decades, it has become a proving ground for racers and a cherished institution, combining a storied history with a vibrant present.
