NORTH WILKESBORO WEATHER

North Wilkesboro Speedway
RaceWeather Forecast Discussion

A humid midsummer pattern will remain in place across northwest North Carolina through the weekend as a weak frontal boundary lingers nearby and several upper-level disturbances move across the region. While each day will feature opportunities for sunshine, warm temperatures and increasing humidity will provide plenty of fuel for afternoon thunderstorm development.

Friday offers the lowest overall storm coverage of the three-day weekend. Afternoon heating combined with the higher terrain of the Blue Ridge Mountains should trigger scattered showers and thunderstorms during the afternoon and early evening. Activity will be hit-or-miss, but any storm that develops could produce frequent lightning, brief heavy rainfall, gusty winds and rapidly changing conditions around the speedway.

The weather pattern becomes somewhat more active for Saturday and Sunday as a strengthening upper-level trough digs into the eastern U.S. Disturbances rotating through the trough will interact with the lingering frontal boundary, providing additional lift for thunderstorm development. Storms are expected to become more numerous during the afternoon and evening hours both days compared to Friday.

There will be a Marginal Risk for severe thunderstorms on both Saturday and Sunday. While widespread severe weather is not anticipated, a few stronger storms could produce damaging wind gusts, frequent cloud-to-ground lightning and locally heavy downpours. Isolated hail cannot be ruled out, though the overall threat remains low.

Overall, this looks like another weekend where flexibility will be important. Dry periods should allow racing to proceed as scheduled much of the time, but scattered afternoon thunderstorms may lead to temporary delays.

More about North Wilkesboro Speedway

North Wilkesboro Speedway is one of NASCAR's most historic venues, blending old-school character with a modern revival. Opened in 1947 and featuring a unique 0.625-mile asphalt oval, the track's uphill backstretch and downhill frontstretch create changing banking and constantly evolving handling conditions. After hosting NASCAR's premier series from 1949 through 1996, the speedway sat dormant for more than two decades before an extensive restoration returned racing to the legendary facility.

Today, North Wilkesboro hosts NASCAR and the CARS Tour along with grassroots racing and special events, reconnecting fans with one of stock car racing's most iconic and beloved short tracks.
