Storyline — Flat and fast — Pocono is a double challenge for a Cup doubleheader: NASCAR teams face many challenges when it comes to Pocono Raceway, most notably a relative lack of banking and an extremely fast layout.  Also, Pocono‘s three straightaways are of different lengths and its corners feature varying radii.  Being a flat track, teams will use various tuning tools to maximize grip and performance, with one of those being adjusting air pressure settings.  Observing Goodyear‘s minimum recommended pressures are an important element in balancing tire durability and performance.  These teams do have a different left-side tire than they had at Pocono last season, and that will give them more grip.

“Pocono is as unique a track as we have on the NASCAR circuit,” said Greg Stucker, Goodyear‘s director of racing.  “It‘s flat, it‘s fast, and every turn and straightaway is different from the last.  The one advantage Cup teams will have is that while they will have no practice this weekend, with a doubleheader of races, they will be able to tune on their set-ups over the two days and figure out what works and what is fast.”

Notes — Pocono set-up includes Darlington/Homestead left-side with a multi-zone tread right-side: Teams in all three NASCAR series will run the same tire set-up at Pocono this weekend . . . this is a different combination of left-and right-side tires than they ran at this track last season . .  NASCAR teams have run this left-side tire code at both Darlington and Homestead since 2019 . . . Cup and Xfinity teams ran this right-side tire code at Auto Club Speedway in 2020, while Camping World Truck teams have never run this right-side . . . compared to what these teams ran at Pocono last season, this left-side tire features a compound change for more grip, while this right side tire features a construction update and moves from a single compound tread to a multi-zone tread . . . Goodyear‘s multi-zone tread right-side tire utilizes two different tread compounds on the same tire — a two-inch inboard compound designed for heat resistance (Endurance Zone) and a 10-inch outboard compound to give more grip (Traction Zone) . . . as on all NASCAR ovals greater than one mile in length, teams are required to run inner liners on all four tire positions at Pocono . . . air pressure in those inner liners should be 12-25 psi greater than that of the outer tire.
