Storyline — High-wear Richmond wraps up short track stretch: This week‘s NASCAR stop at Richmond Raceway marks the third straight race for Cup Series teams on short tracks. All three present challenges to the tires, but Richmond is one where high tire wear is expected and brings tire management into play. Tire management means more “comers” and “goers” throughout the field as some drivers drive aggressively early in a run while others are easier early and gain positions later. Cup teams have nine sets of tires for this 400-lap race (an average of 44 laps per set), so teams will likely take four tires at every reasonable opportunity.
“Richmond has emerged as a high wear track over the past decade as the track surface has aged,” said Greg Stucker, Goodyear‘s director of racing. “As that has happened, it has given us some great racing. Even though Richmond is technically a short track, the cars carry a great deal of speed. You add in the fact that the surface wears tires and you end up having a race with multiple grooves and a lot of passing throughout the field. That makes Richmond a very popular track for both drivers and fans.”
Notes — Teams to return to Richmond on popular tire set-up: NASCAR Cup and Truck Series teams will run the same tire set-up at Richmond this weekend . . . this is the same combination of left- and right-side tires these teams ran at this track last September . . . this is the same tire set-up Cup teams ran at Phoenix earlier this season . . . teams in these series also ran this set-up at several tracks last season — Richmond, Phoenix, New Hampshire (Cup only) and Gateway (Trucks only) . . . as on most NASCAR ovals one mile or less in length, teams will not run inner liners in their tires at Richmond.
