Storyline — Wear now a factor at Kansas: While not really known as a high tire wear track, Kansas Speedway has aged since its 2012 repave and NASCAR teams will have to factor that in during this weekend‘s races.  Cup teams will likely see about a second-and-a-half in fall-off over the course of a run, so tire management will come into play for the drivers.  Goodyear made a right-side compound change for Cup teams only at last fall‘s Kansas race weekend, but all three national series will be on the same tire set-up in 2021.

“Kansas is not as abrasive as high wear tracks like Darlington or Atlanta, but teams will have to plan for some wear this weekend,” said Greg Stucker, Goodyear‘s director of racing.  “While Kansas still has a relatively smooth track surface, tires will fall off over a fuel run and that is a good thing.  When tires shed rubber as they wear, heat is allowed to dissipate through the tread and run cooler and at a more optimal grip level.”

Notes — Cup returns to Kansas on fall ‘20 tire set-up; Trucks have a change to right-side tire: Teams in both the NASCAR Cup and Camping World Truck Series will run the same tire set-up at Kansas this weekend . . . this is the same combination of left- and right-side tires that Cup teams ran at this track last October . . . Cup first ran this left-side tire code at Kansas in October 2019 . . . they added this right-side code last October . . . for the Trucks, they ran this left-side code in three races over two race weekends last season — twice in July and once in October . . . this is the first time Truck teams have run this right-side code at Kansas, though they did run it at Las Vegas earlier this season . . . compared to the right-side they ran at Kansas last season, this tire features a compound change for more grip . . . as on all NASCAR ovals greater than one mile in length, teams are required to run inner liners in all four tire positions at Kansas . . . air pressure in those inner liners should be 12-25 psi greater than that of the outer tire.
