Robert J. “Koolaid” Johnston, 56, of Concord, passed away April 25, 2021. Mr. Johnston was born April 14, 1965 in Summit County, Ohio.

Koolaid loved auto racing and building and restoring cars. He had a huge heart. The rough, tough cream puff would do anything possible to help a friend.

Koolaid is survived by his wife Jodi Lynn Johnston; his mothers, Peggy Smaldino and Alice Johnston; a sister, Tammy Taubert (Bill); his mother in-law, Grace Lynn; a brother in-law, Chris Lynn (Jill); an uncle, Denny Coup (Terry); three nieces, Marissa Bowen (Glenndon), Abigail Lynn (Abi), and Emma Lynn (Kolbe); a nephew, Michael Loughry; two cousins, David Coup (Michelle) and Tammi Woodbury; numerous great-nieces; and his fur babies, Maggie and Gus.

Mr. Johnston was preceded in death by his grandma, Pearl Coup; his father, Al Johnston; and father in-law, Paul Lynn.

A memorial service to honor his life will be held 11:00 AM Thursday, April 29, 2021 at Whitley‘s Funeral Chapel. Chaplain Beth Brittian will officiate. The family will receive friends from 10:00 AM — 11:00 AM prior to the service Thursday.

In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests memorials be made to the Humane Society of Concord and Greater Cabarrus County, 2010 Wilshire Ct. SW, Concord, NC 28025.

Johnston worked a variety of companies throughout NASCAR and ASA over the years. He was also a former engine shop parts manager for Chip Ganassi Racing.
