Storyline — Texas racing surface beginning to mature: It has been four years since Texas Motor Speedway was repaved back in early 2017, and while it is in no stretch of the imagination a high tire wear track, Goodyear has been able to adjust its tread compounds it brings to the track for more grip. That change was made to the right-side compound for the NASCAR Cup cars last October, with the Xfinity and Camping World Truck Series being aligned this weekend. Texas is still a very smooth racing surface and smooth tracks don‘t naturally wear tires. Bringing a compound that wears is important because heat gets dissipated through the tread as it wears, and a ‘cooler‘ tire is a better performing tire.
“As of last fall, we have been able to adjust our right-side tread compound for the Cup cars to give them more grip as the track surface at Texas begins to age,” said Greg Stucker, Goodyear‘s director of racing. “This weekend‘s NASCAR Cup All-Star race has a very racy format with four 15-lap segments followed by one 30-lap segment and concluding with a 10-lap sprint to the finish. Teams will have to manage their tires, getting four sets for those six segments, and balancing tire wear, track position, and the benefits of cooler, fresher tires.”
Notes — Xfinity and Trucks switch to fall ‘20 Cup tire set-up at Texas: Teams in all three NASCAR series will run the same tire set-up at Texas this weekend . . . this is the same combination of left- and right-side tires that NASCAR Cup teams ran at Texas last November . . . Xfinity and Camping World Truck teams ran this left-side tire code at Texas in 2020, but with a different right-side code . . . compared to what Xfinity and Truck ran at Texas last season, this right-side tire features a compound change for more grip . . . teams in all three of these series ran this same tire set-up at Las Vegas this March . . . as on all NASCAR ovals greater than one mile in length, teams are required to run liners in all four tire positions at Texas . . . air pressure in those inner liners should be 12-25 psi greater than that of the outer tire.
