Doug Boles, president of Indianapolis Motor Speedway said on SiriusXM NASCAR Radio that he believes NASCAR will return to the oval layout in the near future.

For the past two years, the NASCAR Cup Series has competed on the IMS road course. The Xfinity Series precedes that, going back to 2020. The Cup races have been won by AJ Allmendinger and Tyler Reddick.

“I think we’ve said, maybe not formally, that we never said we’re not going to go back to the oval when we switched to the road course,” Boles said. “We wanted to see how it worked; that’s why we started with Xfinity and then rolled it into Cup. We wanted to give it some time to see how it worked, instead of just one year.

“Winning on the oval is special. We do want to get back on the oval at some point in time. The question is when do we do that, and do we go back to the oval permanently or do we start some sort of rotation where it’s some years oval, some years road course Or do you do it every 10 years or whatever.

“We haven’t decided exactly how that looks. I do think you’ll see that sooner rather than later and then we’ll figure out what the long term looks like, in terms of our cadence with the road course and the oval.”
